The Milwaukee Brewers policy of using a formula to calculate the salary of pre-arbitration players is going to alienate their young players ensuring that they will split at the first opportunity.
The idea sounds fair and reasonable in principle, but any strict set of rules that doesn’t allow flexibility is going to be unfair.
Yovani Gallardo will make just $450,000 this year in spite of having a 3.73 ERA and 204 strikeouts in 30 starts.
Why is he getting so far below market value?
Because their formula takes in to account Elias ranking which factors in the performance of the last two seasons and, if you will remember, Gallardo was out with a knee injury for the majority of the 2008 season.
Gallardo insists there are no hard feelings, but that is his job. Watch him bolt the first chance he gets when he is in his prime.
The Brewers aren’t expected to do very well this season even with Gallardo playing well. The over/under on season wins for the Brewers currently sits at 80.5.
